Mugs61 - School memories from the "swinging sixties"

Next Reunion - Any Ideas ?

Email received from Pete Normanton - 9/8/2007

Here's an idea for our next monumental get together - no excuses from anyone ... If my calculations are right, we all first met on Monday 4th Sept, 1961. This means our Golden Jubilee would be 4th Sept 2011 which is a Sunday - which starts at midnight on Sat night of 3rd Sept 2011. Hows about a get together on Sat 3rd Sept 2011 on the understanding with the pub manager that we can carry on up to, say, half an hour after midnight to celebrate our Golden Jubilee with some Champers (or some decent bitter and wine at least)? what do you think?

Its a great idea. But its several years away. We could consider the notion of also fitting in something in between ?????  Maybe a dinner or whatever ??

Come on everybody - let's have your comments on the above, or any other ideas on another reunion !!

On Saturday 1st October 2005 we held our first reunion for pupils who attended UpHolland Grammar in the sixties.

Was it a success ?

I think so, I certainly enjoyed it. Until Saturday 1st October I didn't realise just how special my old school friends were. What a great bunch of people they are, it was a memorable night. I have only two regrets, firstly that I didn't arrange a reunion years ago and secondly that I didn't have more time to chat with everyone on the night, the evening just flew by.Thanks to everyone who attended especially those who travelled long distances to be with us. Special thanks to Mr Ellis for coming along and reminding us what a great headmaster we had at UpHolland Grammar.

Approximately 60 former pupils attended the evening at the Squires Bar, Billinge. As you will see from the photos in the album below, a good time was had by everyone including our Guest of Honour, our old headmaster, Mr H.B. Ellis.             (In the Album I have used the girls maiden names as most people will remember them by this.)

Message from David Robinson -  Since the reunion on Saturday 1st October I have received several kind letters, phone calls and emails thanking me for organising the reunion, and saying how much everyone had enjoyed it. Thanks to all of you who contacted me but the success of the reunion was not down to me. I started the ball rolling by booking the venue and arranging for my sister-in-law to do the wonderful buffet, but it was all you great people that attended that made the reunion such a success.
Mr Ellis rang me the night after the reunion and he said that of all the reunions he had attended ours had the best atmosphere of any of them. One thing that really pleased me was that the room wasn't divided into little cliques of people but was just one big circulating group of friends enjoying each others company.
Thanks to everyone for coming. I was especially pleased that friends were willing to travel long distances to attend. Thanks to the friends who helped me on the night with the raffle, buffet, tidying up etc. Thanks to those who brought photos and school magazines for us all to look at.
Thanks to the friends who gave donatios towards keeping the website going. I intend to update it and make it of interest to all pupils from the 1960's. I hope it will be used as a contact point for people to pass messages to friends and also as a tool to help people contact old school friends they have lost touch with.

The Success of the website is up to all of you - If you send me articles, memories, photos and names of people you wish to contact then this will ensure that the site remains interesting. Also spread the word about the website to any old pupils you are in contact with. We desperately need more imput from other years from the 1960's.
